Notícias:

UPDATE: As notícias abaixo sobre as licenças d20 e sobre os PH/DMG/MM renovados por ano foram desmentidas pela Wizards!

As announced, 25 Edition (the Italian D&D publisher) held two seminars regarding IV edition Dungeons & Dragons. The seminars were really packed and the Sunday one was broadcast on the Lucca Comics & Games 'TV channel'. The Italian publisher fielded a lot of questions and these facts emerged:

- Wizards of the Coast is giving all foreign publishers 'maximum' support for trying to release foreign language editions of the core D&D IV edition books along the English language ones. It seems that some publishers are less than enthusiastic about the new D&D Insider web content, however: some have signed up for the expected multilingual release of the Insider and some apparently not.

- Wizards of the Coast will use a 'three tier' system for licenses. The d20 System logo will be - it seems - a traditional WotC trademark licensed just to some big publishers (Mongoose, Paizo, Green Ronin) while other, smaller publisher will have to ask for some support from a bigger publisher that will 'guarantee' that the smaller publishers publish 'quality' books. It seems that the main reasons for this are avoiding the appearance of controversial products such as The Book of Erotic Fantasy and of third rate products that could hurt sales.

- The Italian publisher confirmed that WotC will publish one Player's Handbook, one DM Guide and one Monster Manual every year. It seems that successive editions will 'correct' mistakes and 'update' materials from previous books. There were questions about the effects of this: what if I'm using a 2008 Player's Handbook and a friend uses the 2009 one? How about the compatibility between various core rulebooks of different years? Can I use a 2008 Player's Handbook and a 2010 Monster Manual? It seems that exact plans about this are still subject to change.

- More interesting news about settings: it seems that WotC will publish one campaign setting every year, starting with Forgotten Realms in 2008. - It's not very clear how WotC will deal with the 'gods' issue: the core rulebooks should be 'setting neutral' but inserting gods for priests will make this unfeasible as happened with the 3.0 and 3.5 rulebooks.

- The D&D Insider seems to be a great priority for WotC, especially for allowing players keep... playing albeit they are far from each other, avoiding the problem of people quitting gaming because moving in another city, getting married, having no more time for a weekly face to face session and so on. The 'virtual table' mechanism described in the seminar seems very interesting.

- It seems another goal for WotC is making manuals more useful for all players and avoiding the fact that a Warrior will never use most of the Player's Handbook. Another goal clearly stated is avoiding having players doing nothing, for example when the Magic User has exhausted his spell reserve.

A conferir...

UPDATE:

Felizmente as coisas não são como foram relatadas no meu último post: Nada de "compre um CORE por ano".

I am not sure what was said at the seminar or who even presented the information that was reported on the front page here: 4th Edition Italian News

This comes as a surprise to us and I want to point out two inaccuracies:

1) I just want to officially say that this is not official and that the information presented in the 25th Edition news item is full of inaccuracies one of which is the subject of tiered D20/OGL licensing.

We are not looking to implement a tiered licensing structure. This is stuff we talked about in the seminar at GenCon it was just talk/idea sharing and we long ago decided we would not implement such a system.

There will not be tiers within the OGL.

There will be Wizards official D&D products (which will include licensed D&D products for foreign language translation) and OGL products made by third parties like Paizo, Expeditious Retreat, etc.

We will try to address the other inaccuracies immediately. Sorry if this caused any grief we were caught off guard as well.

2) core rule book sequels will not be updates (mistake corrections) to previously released versions. These will be similar to the PHB to PHBII, DMG to DMGII, or MM to MMx. The game will still require use of the three core rule books (PHB, DMG, MM) and follow up titles will introduce new classes, DM options, and monsters respectively.

Mais notícias, desta vez verídicas e menos polêmicas  :

1) De um playtest:

Technical details? Hm. Andraste (eladrin warlord) hit hard and fast with a powerful daily ability that gave allies a bonus to hit the target. She also used a very, very effective positioning strike to move an ally into flanking position for better attack odds. Ordinarily she wouldn't have used the wizard to do so, but he was standing right there....

(...)

Tuesday night is for Greg Bilsland's game and my elf paladin, Valanae. We fought off some bandits and as before, I'm finding her to be a very effective defender. Creatures want to attack her in preference to the squishy wizard, and there's just been a slight revision to the paladin's healing ability that plays well with the nature of the class.

(...)

Bill Slavicsek's game and my half-elf rogue, Zanne. (I haven't played this many elf-types in years--mostly stuck to humans for the extra feat. Now the race choices are all so tempting I'm making the rounds.) Last night our group hit 8th level, and Bill put us to the test with a couple of tough encounters. We proved tougher. :) First up was a werewolf lord and a bunch of normal werewolves; we all look one look at the towering hairy beast and piled big attacks on it to take it down first, then mopped up the rest relatively straightforwardly. Key fun moment for Zanne: using a warlock power as a completely untraditional (for a rogue) attack option

The second encounter, against a couple of eladrin and a bulette and an owlbear, lasted a lot longer. Eladrin have a movement ability that's hella fun to use when you're a PC and annoying/amusing to deal with as an opponent. I know how to short-cut it next time, though. *cue evil laughter* That actually points to one of the most interesting things about this edition: discovering all the new ways that powers work with and against each other, creating different synergies in every battle. I got to show off nearly all my capabilities during this fight, from tumbling past enemies without provoking opportunity attacks, to the extremely useful enhanced ability to escape a grab (so sorry, giant owlbear, you don't get to chew on my head like a tootsie pop), to the power that lets me switch places with the target. Good times.

(...)

We jumped up to 14th level to give paragon play a workout. Peter talked about it here and I can confirm that Roger was very effective. My halfling warlock went in intending to save most of her big attacks for the eventual dragon, but I got in a few good hits and splurged on a daily power to make one of the giants play whack-a-mole with an ally. That's wicked fun. Emphasis on both wicked and fun.

(...)

(Andraste favors practicality over compassion and her character sheet reads "neither fuzzy nor cute" on the Personality line.)

(...)

I felt particularly warlord-y in that fight, using the eladrin movement ability to position myself for a flank and a nifty strike that allowed the cleric to get in a solid hit on an opponent when I missed. I set 'em up, my allies take 'em down. I like it.

2) Outro playtest:

They awake to a gentle knock, roughly six hours later, just as the dawn light is breaking through their windows. They’ve had enough time to rest, and yet they are surprised at this early awakening; the purpose soon becomes clear.

(...)

These shadowhunter bats weave in and out of the torchlight, striking the PCs on the fringe of the light. After a surprise round, combat begins.

Obstacles, like the coffins and statue, make navigating the room difficult for the groundbourne PCs. They focus on one or two of the bats at a time, usually the ones closest, but the mobility of the creatures works to the bats’ advantage so that no one bat is killed right away and instead they are all brought down a little at a time. Finally, Valenae manages to strike around one of the statues, cleaving one of the bats and knocking it from the air. Gerhart follows up by spraying fire upon both injured and uninjured bats, bringing them ever closer to death. And although it is Wilbur and Valenae that manage to deal mortal blows to the bats, without the support of Kriv flanking and Mal employing his warlord abilities to help keep people up and fighting, the battle might have gone ill. Still, the first room expends a good deal of resources, yet no one suffers too severely.

The southern room is an intersection of ten-foot passages, adorned by several statues and flanked by small alcoves. Wilbur heads in first, leading the group, however he fails to notice the zombie slouched against the well and suffers an attack as he steps into the intersection. Combat begins as that zombie and another lurch forward. The battle is at first difficult because of the width of the narrow corridors. When two more adversaries appear down the corridor, battle grows more dangerous. A corruption corpse and deathlock wight lumber forward, using their powers to aid the zombies and harm the PCs.

(...)

We stopped there for the night, though overall the encounters proved edifying. Combat still had not reached the pace I would like, but discussion of how to improve certain rules and abilities often slowed play. As a DM, I found running the monsters, even the mixed groups, remarkably easier than anything from 3E. Although my choices were fewer, I still felt that I had something interesting to do with a monster every round. More importantly, I didn’t have to study any of the monsters in depth before running them. A brief glance over the stat block right before combat began was usually enough (unless I needed clarification on a term I didn’t know). I anticipate that this process will only become smoother.
